Key dates

Worked out from the matching and placement dates. If placement moves, the weeks move with it, but the dates for the matching week don’t.

  • 6 June 2026The latest either parent could have started with their employer to have 26 weeks by the matching week.
  • Sunday 22 November to Saturday 28 November 2026The matching week. Each parent needs 26 weeks with their employer by the end of it for adoption, paternity and Shared Parental Pay.
  • 2 December 2026Within 7 days of being matched: the main adopter tells their employer the placement date and when adoption leave and pay will start. The other parent claims paternity leave by the same day.
  • 16 December 2026The earliest adoption leave and pay can start: 14 days before placement.
  • 30 December 2026The child is placed with you. This plan counts its weeks from here.
  • 5 May 2027Both parents give notice: the main adopter, to end their adoption leave early; the other parent, of their entitlement and the dates they’ll take. At least 8 weeks before their leave starts.
  • 30 June 2027 to 28 September 2027The other parent’s Shared Parental Leave, paid for 13 weeks.
  • 30 June 2027The main adopter goes back to work after 26 weeks. Changing the return date takes 8 weeks’ notice.
  • 29 December 2027The last day Shared Parental Leave can be taken: the day before the first anniversary of placement.

Using this calculator

Enter the matching and placement dates, both parents’ pay, how many weeks each will take, and when the other parent’s leave starts. The calculator shows Statutory Adoption Pay week by week, who’s at home, and the pay together over the first year after placement, set against the main adopter taking all the leave and against half each.

  • Statutory Adoption Pay is paid like maternity pay: 6 weeks at 90% of average pay, then £194.32 a week, or 90% if that’s less, to week 39. Adoption leave runs for up to 52 weeks.
  • The main adopter can end their leave early, after at least 2 weeks, and the weeks they don’t take become Shared Parental Leave: up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 of pay between you, by the first anniversary of placement.
  • Pay here is before tax and National Insurance. The plan counts weeks from placement, and leaves out leave taken in the 14 days before it, keeping in touch days, and overseas adoptions and surrogacy, which have their own dates.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Statutory Adoption Pay?

90% of your average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks, then £194.32 a week, or 90% if that’s less, for the next 33: 39 weeks in all. Adoption leave can last 52 weeks; the last 13 are unpaid unless your employer pays.

Who can get Statutory Adoption Pay?

An employee who’s worked for their employer for at least 26 weeks by the week they’re matched with the child, and earns an average of at least £129 a week. Adoption leave itself is a right from the first day in a job.

Can we both take adoption leave?

No. A couple choose one of you to take adoption leave and pay. The other can take 2 weeks’ paternity leave, a right from the first day in a job for a child placed from 6 April 2026, and share whatever the main adopter doesn’t use as Shared Parental Leave. Paternity pay is £194.32 a week, or 90% of average earnings if less, and needs 26 weeks with the employer by the matching week and earnings of at least £129 a week.

When does adoption leave start?

On the day the child is placed with you, or up to 14 days before. For an adoption from overseas, it starts when the child arrives in the UK or within 28 days after.

How do we share adoption leave?

The main adopter ends their leave early, after at least 2 weeks. The weeks they don’t take become Shared Parental Leave and the weeks of pay become Shared Parental Pay: up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 of pay between you, by the first anniversary of placement. You can take turns or be off together.

Who can take Shared Parental Leave after an adoption?

The parent taking it needs 26 weeks with their employer by the matching week, and to still be there. The other parent must have worked in 26 of the 66 weeks before the matching week and earned £390 in 13 of them. For the pay, the person taking it needs average earnings of at least £129 a week, and the main adopter must be getting Statutory Adoption Pay.

How much notice do we need to give?

The main adopter tells their employer within 7 days of being matched when adoption leave will start and the placement date, and gives at least 28 days’ notice of when the pay should start. The other parent claims paternity leave within 7 days of the match too. Each block of Shared Parental Leave needs at least 8 weeks’ notice.

Is it the same for two dads or two mums?

Yes. The rules are the same for any couple: one of you is the main adopter, and the other takes paternity leave and can share the rest.

What if the main adopter doesn’t get adoption pay?

Their adoption leave is unpaid unless their employer pays. It can still be shared if they’ve worked in 26 of the 66 weeks before the matching week and earned £390 in 13 of them, but there’s no Shared Parental Pay.

Do employers pay more than the statutory rate?

Some do. Many enhanced adoption schemes are more generous than their shared parental pay, and some ask for the extra back if you don’t return for a set time. Check both employers’ policies before deciding how to split the leave.

What doesn’t this calculator cover?

Overseas adoptions and surrogacy, which have their own dates; leave taken in the 14 days before placement; more than one block each; keeping in touch days; tax and National Insurance; and Northern Ireland, which has its own very similar rules. For a birth, use the Shared Parental Leave calculator.
