Terms of use & disclaimer
These are the conditions on which you may use this website. In brief: the calculators and guides are free to use, they provide estimates to help you understand your own circumstances, and they do not constitute financial, tax or legal advice. Please verify anything important before you rely on it.

About these terms
This website, burgesssoftware.co.uk, is run by Burgess Software, a software studio based in South-East England (“we” and “us”). These terms apply whenever you use the site: its calculators, its guides and every other page. By using the site you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.
How we handle your information is covered separately, on the Privacy & cookies page.
What the site is for
The calculators work out estimates of UK pay, tax, pensions, loans, property costs and statutory payments from the figures you enter, and the guides explain the rules behind them. They are free to use and are meant to help you understand how the rules apply to you, compare options and know what to ask.
Everything on the site is for general information about UK rules. It isn’t written for any one person’s circumstances, and it isn’t a substitute for the official figures you get from your employer, HMRC, your lender, your pension provider or another organisation that deals with you directly.
It isn’t advice
Nothing on this site is financial, investment, tax, legal or pensions advice, and nothing on it is a recommendation to do or not do anything, such as overpay a loan, pay into a pension, buy a property, set up a company or make a will. We are not financial advisers, accountants or solicitors, and we don’t give regulated advice.
For a decision that matters, check the official guidance on GOV.UK or with HMRC, and think about speaking to a qualified professional: a regulated financial adviser, an accountant or tax adviser, or a solicitor. MoneyHelper, which is backed by the government, gives free and impartial guidance on money and pensions.
How accurate the figures are
Each calculator uses the official rates, thresholds and rules for the tax year or period it shows, checked against the official sources: GOV.UK, HMRC, the devolved governments and, for inflation, the Office for National Statistics. Every calculator lists its sources under “Where the figures come from”, and the Our figures page shows when each set was last checked.
We work hard to keep them right, but we can’t promise that every figure, rule or result is accurate, complete or up to date at every moment. Rates change, often at a Budget, and new rules can apply from a date we haven’t caught up with yet. Results are rounded, and some rules are simplified so a calculator stays usable.
If you think something is wrong, please tell us at enquiries@burgesssoftware.co.uk. We’ll check it and put it right.
How the results are worked out, and their limits
A result is only as good as the figures you enter and the assumptions behind it. Each calculator explains what it assumes under “Using this calculator” and in its questions and answers, and some, such as the pension, mortgage, compound interest and student loan calculators, project years ahead on growth, interest or inflation rates that are only assumptions. The future will be different.
The calculators also cover the common cases rather than every case. They may not allow for things such as other income, a tax code adjustment, a benefit, a special scheme or an unusual contract that would change your answer. Where a calculator knows it leaves something out, it says so.
Your responsibility
You are responsible for the figures you enter, for checking the results before you rely on them, and for any decision you make. Please compare important results with your payslip, your statements or the official figures, and get advice where you need it.
Your figures and shared links
The calculators work in your browser. What you type isn’t sent to us or saved, and it’s gone when you close the page.
Your figures only go into a web address when you choose to put them there:
- Share with my figures. The Share button can make a link with your figures in it. Anyone you send that link to, or who sees it, can see those figures, so share it with care.
- Moving between calculators. Links from one calculator to another carry your figures across so you don’t have to type them again.
The Privacy & cookies page explains what happens to an address like that when it’s opened.
Adverts and cookies
The site is paid for by adverts from Google AdSense, which is how the calculators stay free. The adverts are chosen and shown by Google, not by us, and showing an advert doesn’t mean we recommend the product or company in it. The Privacy & cookies page explains the cookies Google uses and how to change your choice.
Links to other websites
The site links to other websites, mostly official ones such as GOV.UK and HMRC, so you can check the source of a figure or read more. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for what they say or for how they handle your information.
Using the site
You’re welcome to use the calculators and guides for your own purposes, and to link to any page. Please don’t:
- use the site in a way that breaks the law, or that harms it or anyone using it;
- try to get into parts of the site or its servers that aren’t meant to be public, or interfere with how it works;
- copy the site’s calculators, code or guides in bulk, or run automated tools that put a heavy load on it.
We try to keep the site available and working, but it’s provided as it is, and we can’t promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may change, add to or remove any part of it at any time.
Copyright
The site’s content, design and code belong to Burgess Software. You can print or save pages and results for your own use and share links to them. Please don’t republish our guides or calculators, or present them as your own, without asking us first. The official rates and rules the calculators use are Crown copyright, used under the Open Government Licence.
Our responsibility to you
The site is free and gives general estimates, not advice, so as far as the law allows we aren’t responsible for any loss you suffer because you relied on a calculator, a guide or anything else on the site, or because the site wasn’t available. The site is for personal use, and we aren’t responsible for any business loss, such as lost profit, income or opportunity.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that the law doesn’t allow us to limit or exclude. Nothing in them affects your legal rights as a consumer.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example when we add a calculator or the law changes. The date at the top of the page shows when they last changed, and the terms on this page when you use the site are the ones that apply.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can deal with any dispute about them. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your own country’s courts.
