Key dates

Worked out from the due date, taking the birth as that day. If the baby comes early or late, the weeks move with the birth, but the notice dates for the qualifying week don’t.

  • 23 May 2026The latest either parent could have started with their employer to have 26 weeks by the qualifying week.
  • Sunday 8 November to Saturday 14 November 2026The qualifying week, 15 weeks before the due week. Each parent needs 26 weeks with their employer by the end of it.
  • 14 November 2026The mother tells her employer she’s pregnant, the due date and when her maternity leave starts. The other parent tells theirs about paternity leave by the same day.
  • 25 February 2027The due date. The mother’s maternity leave starts on the birth at the latest; this plan counts its weeks from here.
  • 1 July 2027Both parents give notice: the mother, to end her maternity leave early; the other parent, of their entitlement and the dates they’ll take. At least 8 weeks before their leave starts.
  • 26 August 2027 to 24 November 2027The other parent’s Shared Parental Leave, paid for 13 weeks.
  • 26 August 2027The mother goes back to work after 26 weeks. Changing the return date takes 8 weeks’ notice.
  • 24 February 2028The last day Shared Parental Leave can be taken: the day before the first birthday.

Using this calculator

Enter both parents’ pay, how many weeks each will take, and when the other parent’s leave starts. The calculator shows what each week pays, who’s at home, and the pay together over the baby’s first year, set against the mother taking all the leave and against half each.

  • The mother ends her maternity leave early, and the weeks she doesn’t take become Shared Parental Leave: up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 of pay between you. She must take the first 2 weeks after the birth.
  • Shared Parental Pay is £194.32 a week, or 90% of average pay if that’s less. Unlike maternity pay, there are no weeks at 90% of full pay, which is why sharing early in the year often costs more.
  • Pay here is before tax and National Insurance. The plan counts weeks from the birth, and leaves out keeping in touch days and leave taken before the birth.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shared Parental Leave?

It lets the mother end her maternity leave early and share what’s left with the other parent: up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay between you. You can take it in turns or be off together, in up to 3 blocks each, by the child’s first birthday.

How much is Shared Parental Pay?

£194.32 a week in 2026/27, or 90% of average weekly earnings if that’s less. Unlike Statutory Maternity Pay, there are no weeks at 90% of full pay, so the first 6 weeks are usually best left with the mother.

How many weeks can we share?

The mother must take the 2 weeks after the birth (4 if she works in a factory). Of the rest of her 52 weeks of leave, whatever she doesn’t take is shared leave, and of her 39 weeks of pay, whatever she doesn’t use is Shared Parental Pay.

Who is eligible?

The parent taking Shared Parental Leave needs 26 weeks with their employer by the 15th week before the due week, and to still be there. The other parent must have worked in 26 of the 66 weeks before the due week and earned £390 in 13 of them. For the pay, the person taking it also needs average earnings of at least £129 a week.

Can we both be off at the same time?

Yes. The other parent’s leave can start while the mother is still on maternity leave, as long as she’s given notice to end hers. Every week either of you takes comes out of the same 52.

How much notice do we need to give?

At least 8 weeks before each block of leave, with a notice of entitlement and the dates. The mother’s notice to end her maternity leave early goes in at least 8 weeks before too. Each of you can book up to 3 blocks.

Does it cost more to share?

Often, yes. If the other parent earns more, the family loses more pay while they’re off, and Shared Parental Pay is capped at the same flat rate. Sharing later in the year, when maternity pay has run out, usually costs less than sharing early.

What if the mother doesn’t get Statutory Maternity Pay?

If she gets Maternity Allowance instead, she can end it early and the other parent can take Shared Parental Leave and Pay in the same way. If she gets neither, the other parent can’t take Shared Parental Leave.

Can the other parent still take paternity leave?

Yes. Paternity leave is separate: 2 weeks at the same rate as Shared Parental Pay. From April 2026 the leave is a right from the first day in a job (the pay still needs 26 weeks with the employer), and can be taken at any time in the first year, including after Shared Parental Leave.

Do employers pay more than the statutory rate?

Some do. Many enhanced maternity schemes are more generous than their shared parental pay, and some ask for the extra back if you don’t return for a set time. Check both employers’ policies before deciding how to split the leave.

What if the child has two mothers?

The mother who gave birth takes maternity leave and pay, and the other mother is the other parent here: she can take paternity leave and share the weeks, the same as a father.

Does Shared Parental Leave work for adoption?

Yes, counted from the day the child is placed with you rather than the birth, with Statutory Adoption Pay in place of maternity pay. The adoption pay and leave calculator plans it.

What doesn’t this calculator cover?

Leave before the birth, more than one block each, keeping in touch days, tax and National Insurance, and Northern Ireland, which has its own very similar rules. The maternity pay calculator shows starting before the birth and pay month by month.
